The Walter Hagen Cup also known as The Match Play Cup is one of our first trophies. This cup originated around 1920. The perpetual is the same size as the original pot metal trophy loaned to me by a collector friend of mine. We named it The Walter Hagen Cup in honor of Hagen because he was such a great match play competitor. Winning the PGA Championship in 1921 over the first PGA Champion Jim Barnes; Hagen also won the Championship in 1924-1925-1926-1927 and was runner up to Gene Sarazen in 1923. The PGA was a match play competition until 1958. Jack Nicklaus is the only other five-time winner all after 1958.
In 1920 Woodrow Wilson a Democrat was President. The British Open was won by George Duncan at Royal Cingue Ports Golf Club. The U.S. Open was won by Ted Ray at the Inverness Club and Jack Hutchison won the P.G.A. Championship at Flossmoor Country Club.
