The oldest of all our cups is the Tom Morris Cup. It is modeled after a trophy made in 1855. The British Open did not begin until 1860. Franklin Pierce whose nickname was "Young Hickory of the Granite Hills" was President of the United States. This trophy was originally given by the Ridgway Coursing Club to its Champion. Coursing is the sport of one man and two dogs chase of a hare. "The sport of taking the dogs out for the sake of the course and contest between the dogs and hare and his escape". Not unlike golf, we take on the challenge of the course with the knowledge that it will get the best of us in the end. Sometimes we win and sometimes old man par wins, but we play the game for the love of the sport. The model is the oldest trophy I have ever purchased and has by far the most detail of any of our trophies. This trophy is currently available in one size. |
